Last night, I couldn’t sleep. I woke up feeling upset. I was not able to get up early for a run. I did not have much time to do my evening and morning routines. A poor sleep arrangement ruined my rest time.
We made the mistake of sleeping together as a family of four on the queen-sized bed. Our 2-year-old tossed and turned, and I was constantly worried she would fall out of bed.
I feel selfish. My Ironman 70.3 race is in a week. I feel uncomfortable not being able to follow my training plan in this family. Obviously, I’m fully aware of the whole plan. It’s OK to skip training. It’s just funny when something went wrong, the frustration drew out nervousness.
We’re on a family trip to Lombok, Indonesia. It’s been a truly wonderful time that my family joined our two friends on their 10th wedding anniversary.
I felt guilty taking today off, as there are a few important matters to resolve, and our chief of staff is taking her well-deserved time off for a European trip. Today is also a working day after a long public holiday observed by my family. I was slightly grumpy at breakfast. We prepared everything for a self-served breakfast.
However, I soon told myself that an upset attitude would ruin not only my day but everyone else’s. The motivation to not be a drag on anyone else was enough to fix my state. I went from feeling sleep-deprived to looking to be centered emotionally and physiologically.
We went on a boat today and had memorable experiences. We stuffed bread into a plastic bottle, jumped off the boat, and took it swimming and snorkeling. The fish were drawn to the food, and swimming among them was magical. The coral reefs looked dead under, but the water was clear. We stopped by Pink Beach, a popular site with amazing water. Another highlight was lunch at the floating restaurant with the lobster we bought from a fish farm.
The day ended with a spectacular dinner. We did not book in advance, and the available slots were uncomfortable, either too warm or too dark. However, as we left, the waiters graciously offered us a reserved table, splitting one table from the combined setup to make extra room for the next room. It’s our 2nd day in Lombok, and the service staff is lovely. The service sophistication and English level aren’t the same as other popular locations such as Bali, the more popular island next to Lombok. We chose Lombok to avoid crowded places, and we weren’t disappointed.
