“One day, or, day one. You decide.”

Today, I came across that catchy phrase that Dwayne Johnson shared. Besides his amazing physique and success, he has a great motivational voice. That voice-over has appeared in many shorts showing people’s transformation. The decision to go from “Ah, I’ll do it one day” to “I’ll start with day one” would lead to many success stories.

I wanted to swim more than 2 hours non-stop one day. I wanted to bike for more than 6 hours non-stop one day. I wanted to run more than 5 hours non-stop one day.

I’m grateful that I can comfortably do all of the above now. What happens when I do all of those continuously? The occasion for that is in two weeks’ time. If I could finish the entire Ironman race then, that day would come. I should remember those Day One’s. It fits my approach to using identity over willpower to get going each day.

Today, I went on another 6-hour bike ride. Even though it was only the third time, it still felt like Day One. It was just so daunting. I’m proud it was done.

On Friday, I dreaded what was coming on Saturday, which was today. Yesterday, I felt distracted, still thinking about my work responsibilities and how I could be more helpful to my staff and clients. I looked forward to the weekend to cool down mentally. Ironically, the weekend is when I would be tired physically.

Due to sleeping late, I wanted to start the bike ride later to simulate the race day. My wife was still in China for business, so it’s one of those Saturdays I don’t have to stop for a family lunch. I did a bike ride from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., followed by a brick run. I then played with my second daughter in the park and picked up the first daughter after her art class at 5 p.m.

Compared to last time, I’m more aware of nutrition now.

Water: 2.5L (from 5x 500ml bottle) Calories: 700 calories (4x 100 kcal from Tailwind scoops + 3x 260 kcal from dense energy bars) Protein: 60g (2x 20g from energy bars). Protein isn’t needed during exercise unless it’s a long one. Salt: 1200ml (4x 310g). I know I will need double that outdoors, and I can rely on cheap hydration packets from the pharmacy, such as Charz and Oresol.

I’m still searching for energy bars that are still easy to digest, without refined sugar, and with some protein to bring to the Philippines for the bike ride.
